Alexander Borovsky, businessman, MAZ Director

This man can call himself a darling of fortune: he was able to step twice into the same river of large state-run business in Belarus.

Alexander Borovsky made unique progress in his career from a mechanic at Belarusian Tyre Works to the general director of Belarusian state-owned Belneftekhim oil and chemistry conglomerate, which manages all of the country’s petrochemical companies. His track record attests to his ambition and extraordinary managerial skills

However, in May 2007, the Belarusian KGB arrested him on suspicion of abuse of office and embezzlement, and eight months later, the court sentenced him to five years in prison and banned him from holding executive positions for three years upon release.

It seemed that was the end of it for Borovsky. Yet, the Belarusian dictatorship has its bright sides. Alexander Borovsky was pardoned under a presidential decree and appointed general director of BelavtoMAZ production association and general director of Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ). The original court sentence that disallowed Borovsky to act as a top manager was not even revised.

This high-ranking official must still be having nightmares about his prison cell. There are no doubts that he still remembers it – you can’t simply wipe some memories from your mind.
